The story of our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol
Our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol, a former waggoners’ guesthouse, was mentioned for the first time in the 12th century: the guesthouse “Zur Weißen Lilie” (The White Lily] was formerly also known as “Hecher”. The present-day 4-star hotel in South Tyrol has remained nearly unchanged for the past five centuries. The economic high around the turn of the century in 1500 was followed by a longer low; during this period, hardly any renovations took place at the hotel. Originally, our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol was composed of two adjacent burgher houses, which were combined into one around the year 1540.
One of the most striking features of our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol is the design of the house front, the entrance, the windows, the gazebos and the rooms. Once upon a time, members of the higher class owned the 4-star Hotel Lilie in South Tyrol. You can read the names of the architect and the first host of “Weiße Lilie” above the archway of our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol, built in the Late Gothic period. The family emblem of Ulrich Protpauch, with the French lily blossom as main symbol, also adorns the archway of our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol. The lily is a recurring decorative element in our hotel in Vipiteno/Sterzing in South Tyrol. Around 1550, economy stagnated in Vipiteno and the owners of “Zur Weißen Lilie”, the present-day 4-star hotel in South Tyrol, turned towards farming. Then, the guesthouse’s main source of income was the waggoner service. The former stables were of an astounding size and could accommodate up to 60 horses. The waggoners passing through, the accommodation of the guests and the care of the horses were essential to the economic survival of the Fugger town.
Over the course of the centuries, the owners changed several times. In 1757, Franz Pichler bought the guesthouse “Zur Weißen Lilie” during an auction and sold our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol to Maria Anna Leis. The baroque decoration of the street-side front and the paintings of Saint Christophorus stem from the time of her ownership. Later Franz Hecher became the property owner of our 4-star hotel in South Tyrol, which is why the hotel in Alta Val d’Isarco/Wipptal was also known as “Hecher”. In 2002, extensive renovations restored the original character of the building, which today is protected by the state as a treasure of fine arts.
